What's snow got to do with it??

Snow on and off the page

DL here. This past weekend I lived through a real-life “snowed-in” trope. We had the same amount of snow fall in two days as we did all last winter. There was lots of snow removal required.

This reminded me of when Gala and I were writing this scene with Sarah from Distance, Love, & Us, the last book in our “And Us” series:

  • “I pull my sleep mask off my eyes. Even from my bed I can see mountains of snow outside. Off in the distance, a tractor blows snow off the driveway. Quite the storm last night. In Toronto. My new reality digs its claws into my shattered heart. Lying in bed without Nick is worse than venturing into the frigid room.”

Note the word tractor there. Originally, I wrote snow blower, but that confused Gala.

Gala had never heard of a snow blower before!

Ah, the joys (or not) of living in an area that doesn’t get much snow. At first, Gala thought this was another one of my Canadianisms (toque, shoulder check, parkade, serviette, washroom, etc.), but I think it's broader in this case. It's a living-in-the-snowism.

Have you ever used a snowblower or are you more of a shovel person? Neither?
